Race Recap: 2018 Alaska Dog Works Dryland Derby

We not only competed in but was also the lead sponsor of the Alaska Dog Works Dryland Derby that was held the first week of October. We had three mushers enter in the events.

The dryland season for us started in earnest with us racing each weekend during the month of September at both Chugiak and a new event down at Kincaid Park in Anchorage.

Dryland mushing is really picking up steam here in the area as more clubs are finding ways to add new events and to get mushers more involved.

The first few weeks were preliminary races. We tried a bunch of different team combinations and new equipment. Several of our dogs raced for the first time and Robert tried out his new carbon bike.

Hi my name is Lock, I’m part of the Nightmare Crew. We are named after the Tim Burton movie “Nightmare Before Christmas” We live up to our names! At the end of the season last year we started training on the sled. I’m still not sure that I like running on frozen lakes or overflows. Last season while running on one of the lakes there was some open water and I got pretty freaked out. I was running with Ms. Michele and she literally reached over the sled and scooped me into the basket while we were still running because I slipped my collar out of fear of the water. She secured me in the basket and once we got off the lake she put me back on the line and I ran home. Now I still am nervous around open water but I’m learning this fall that puddles are okay.

In March of 2017 and after months of planning, Robert and eight others from the University of Alaska Anchorage embarked on a trip that had never been done before. A week in the Alaskan backcountry by dog team, fat bike and snow machine. What made this trip different was that Robert designed it from the ground up as part of his internship at UAA.
